Are You Hard on Yourself?
I want to share one of my songs with you today that is a message that probably everyone needs to hear. So many people are hard on themselves for not always doing what they know would be good for them. And, as you can probably guess, I wrote this song because I do this too. When I wrote this song a few years back, I felt like I had received so much great information, had been given wonderful tools to improve myself and my life over the years, and that despite all that great knowledge, I was inconsistent in putting it all to use. It was easier to fall into old patterns and throw in the new behaviors sporadically.
I Should Be Doing More, Should Have Figured This Out Already...
I Should be Be Further Down My Path
Do you have trouble doing the things you know will be good for you? Like meditating or exercising. Or doing breathing exercises or getting help for your troubled relationship? Or using that piece of exercise equipment that gathers dust most days?
Maybe it’s taking time for you, instead of giving it all away to everyone else. Or taking time to select really nutritional food for you and your family, and taking the time to prepare it well.
Who has the time to do it all?
If you’re like me, you have been growing, and learning for many years. Perhaps you read self-help books along the way, or go to great workshops and pick up some new tools. And you get really excited about something new and practice it for a period of time, but then it goes by the wayside, or gets revisited only occasionally.
And then you start with the, “I should be listening to that audiotape,” or “I should be walking everyday,” or “I shouldn’t be smoking” or “I know I need to stop drinking so much coffee.” Or whatever those statements are that you tell yourself.
This is a Journey and a Process
Listen to this song, and hear what part speaks to you. The thing is, we are absolutely perfect, in that very divine sense. We are already whole, and we have just layered ourselves with things, habits, fears, thoughts and behaviors that hide that divine wholeness within. What can set you free from this crippling self-defeating self-talk is stepping back from the behaviors and thoughts and viewing yourself with compassion. You are human, and you are striving to be the best you possible. That’s a good thing! And, it is definitely a journey, a process. You are on your path, right where you need to be. Give yourself a break, breathe deeply, and allow yourself to be a divine human being, a work-in-progress. You will fly if you do this!
Why be free? Because you have more options when you release that insane pressure on yourself. Plus, the paradox theory applies here: as soon as you release that resistance, that pressure on yourself, that’s the moment that you can change!
There is a Way to Grow with more Consistency and Compassion
This song is not to be used an excuse to stay stuck in old, unproductive, destructive thoughts and behaviors. It is simply a reminder to keep growing, keep moving towards owning your wholeness, keep doing the things that will make you whole, AND, be gentle with yourself. It is a process, and you need to remember as you grow and evolve, that you are right where you need to be.
And, I have learned that it is very possible to apply the things that you know help and support you and your dreams—in a more consistent way than you may have been doing. It is a part of a powerful and exciting course I am developing that I will tell you about soon.
So, for now, sing this song and let it sink into your subconscious mind where it will help you to remember that you are Love, first and foremost.
Start to Use Music Intentionally
Listen to this song, if you like it, several times a day. Choose some other songs that have supportive lyrics, ones that empower your goals and intents.
Be sure to begin your listening with a statement of intent, as that will increase its effectiveness. Most importantly, begin to sing along. Learn the lyrics and sing them. Then, begin to use your intention to use the song as a coach. By singing to yourself, you increase a thousand fold the power of any song.
"All That I Know"
- music
and lyrics by Marcia Breitenbach © 2001
All that I know, and all that I’ve been given,
Still, it can be hard, to do the things that will make me whole.
I forget I’m human, and my expectations high,
I am imperfectly perfect, and my Spirit knows that it wants to fly.
Chorus:
So, fly with me, I’ll set my soul free,
By knowing I’m doing the best I can
And I’m loved, yes I am loved, oh I am Love.
Oh I’m loved, yes I am Love.
You’re on a path, to be whole and free and healed.
Just keeping taking those baby steps,
You are guided to where you’re meant to be.
Don’t get discouraged, when you fall into old ways,
The darkness helps us to find the Light,
And your journey to open your Heart will pay.
So, fly with me, you’ll set your soul free,
Accept yourself as you are right now,
You are loved, yes you are loved, oh you are LOVE,
Oh you’re loved, yes you are Love!
